Michael Walther from Jetting has many years of experience in fiber blowing!
He is also an instructor at Jetting's and Alcadon's roadshows throughout Europe.
Being a fiber blower isn’t just a job...
...it’s a mix of technical skill, problem-solving, and working closely with the elements.
We spoke with Michael Walther, an experienced fiber blower with 17 years in the field, who shared his daily routine, challenges, and why Jetting's machines are essential in the field.
A typical workday
"My day usually begins with cutting ducts to loop cabinets and manholes," Michael explains.
"I then load the required cable drum and head out to survey the site. Based on the conditions, I decide where to set up. I perform test blowing or suction (if we’re using a flushing truck) to ensure that the right ducts are connected and reach the correct end cabinet."
Michael continues: "Next, I blow out any water with a cleaning projectile, run lubricated projectiles through the ducts, and let the air dry the lubricant. Then, the cable is fed through.
Once it reaches its destination, we sling it into cabinets and manholes, splice the ducts, and finally document the cable length on a pull sheet and label the cable with an identification number."
Challenges in the field
"There are many potential issues, but leakage in ducts is one of the toughest," Michael shares.
"The cable can pass the leak for several hundred meters before stopping, making it nearly impossible to locate the problem. Another common challenge is having an overly high fill ratio in the ducts."
Preparation is key!
"I always ensure I’m set up for success. This means accounting for elevation changes, tight bends, and having enough space for all equipment," says Michael.
"I double-check duct couplings, ensure there's enough fuel for the compressor, and verify that the machine’s lubrication oil is fresh. Even something as simple as wiping the cable clean before feeding it into the machine can make a big difference.
Good preparation saves time and reduces risks!"
Why I choose Jetting's blowing machines
"What sets Jetting’s machines apart is their quick setup time and versatility.
With the V2, for example, I can handle everything from 2 mm nano cables to 16 mm cables – even with drums weighing over 1,000 kg.
These machines can adapt to multiple types of ducting on the same project, which is incredibly reassuring when conditions change unexpectedly."
Four from Michael Walther
The best part of the job as a fiber blower?
"Working outdoors in the fresh air, visiting new places, and knowing that no two days are the same."
The importance of proper equipment?
"Having the right equipment is non-negotiable. I never start a job unless I know I have everything I need."
Advice for beginners
"Work alongside someone experienced for at least six months and learn their tips and tricks," Michael advises. "Start by operating the machine under easier conditions and gradually take on more responsibility. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – that’s how you grow."
Most memorable projects?
"After 17 years, it’s hard to pick just one, but a standout project was blowing a backbone cable over 130 km. It was challenging on many levels, but there were plenty of fun moments throughout the journey."
